Course Description

The aim of this course is to provide students with a high level of proficiency in the design and manufacture of furniture. Students will gain the necessary skills to continue their studies, gain employment in the industry or start their own business. Students will be encouraged to work independently or in groups in a learner centred environment.

Career prospects / progression

Graduates will be qualified to seek work in the areas of reproduction furniture, contemporary furniture, kitchen manufacture, contract furniture and other wood related industries. Graduate will be competent in areas of research and development, design and manufacture of prototypes in all the above areas. Graduates, with a knowledge of furniture design and manufacture, visualisation of designs, presentation of drawings and concepts and model/prototype making, are sought by architectural or design companies. This course will provide graduates with a good foundation to advance their studies in a wide variety of wood related areas.


Certification

Students who successfully complete this course achieve a FETAC Level 5 Award in Furniture Design (AFURX).


Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate with a minimum C1 in one of the following: Construction Studies, Art or Technical Drawing. or Applicants may present portfolio of drawings/sketches or photographs of projects completed. Applications from mature students or students qualified in other disciplines are welcome.
